Welcome to the blog spot for Open Narrative. My name is Lorraine and I am the founder of Open Narrative. I want to talk to you about the two most important things a company has, its ethics and values. These define what they believe in as an organisation and how a company will move forward as it grows.
Ethics and Values are the driving force behind a company’s operations and processes – providing they are given consideration when decisions are made.
At Open Narrative we strongly believe in ensuring that we live up to our environmental values.
“Our products are created to help people be joyful beings who walk lightly on the planet. All our products are produced using the most sustainable and environmentally friendly resources available so that we can keep our carbon footprint to a minimum.”
As a society we seem to be obsessed with things, whether that’s the newest tech or a stylish sofa. Each time we buy something new we are buying into a process where objects have to be made and that has an environmental impact. I know it’s the way the economy goes around and, don’t get me wrong, I like new things too.
Over the past few years I have tried to be more conscious of what I’m buying.
So, before I buy anything, I ask myself
- Do I need it?
- What difference will it make to my life if I buy it?
- What difference will it make to my life if I don’t buy it?
Once I am satisfied that something won’t end up in a cupboard uneaten, unused or unworn, I ask myself about its origins.
- What is it made from?
- Where was it made?
- How long will it last?
Buying cheaply isn’t necessarily the most economical so I buy the best that I can afford. This usually means something will last a lot longer or be repairable. I really do believe that “you get what you pay for”.
At Open Narrative the same ethos applies. When sourcing suppliers or collaborators there are certain aspects where I cannot compromise.
2. Strong environmental credentials.
All our paper products are printed in the UK and we use only FSC* certified paper. For the future we are looking to ensure that all our products are produced using vegetable rather than petroleum-based inks.
*FSC stands for ‘Forest Stewardship Council’. They are an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. FSC certifies forests all over the world to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards.
Products made with wood and paper from FSC forests are marked with the ‘tick tree’ logo. When you see this logo, you can be confident that buying it won’t mean harming the world’s forests.
